Marathon Recap

The big weekend loomed. We find our subject, 36 hours before race time, frantically packing and repacking her bags. Does she have everything? Anti blister socks? iPhone holder? Gels? Can she do it? Hear the pitter patter of her {already spazzy} heart as panic modes sets in...

The irony! I Marathon station, right at the finish line!
We went over to Stillwater on Saturday, so I could pick up my packet and get a "feel" for the town. After all, it gave me more chance to be nervous. I had purposely not paid much attention to the route beforehand as I didn't want to further freak myself out. Stillwater is known to be a pretty hilly town, and I knew I would have to climb a few during my run. I still have no idea how the course measures up to other marathons, but I am taking RunMommyRuns word that it was challenging. She has run 4 marathons, so she must know more than me.

My sister, brother in law and nephew met us in town on Saturday to hang out and eat lunch. That was cool, as it allowed me to relax a bit. {Whatever. I lied. Whenever you get our 3 boys together it is mass chaos. Your blood pressure goes up just being in a 100 meter distance from them.}
We ate lunch at a cute cafe on the corner, with outside seating and great river views. Then we walked for a bit, went across the lift bridge and checked out some shops. {Yummy candy shop! Fudge was 50% off!}
I was super nervous during my packet pick up, but spent quite a bit of time talking to a guy from the Pace Team- they are people who run marathons for the sole purpose of pacing people. He suggested I try to run with the 4:15 pace group, but I decided to do the 4:30 group, as I thought it would be more comfortable for the first time.

Okay. I love pasta. Runners are always eating pasta before big races. However, I get a stomach ache from eating pasta. So, I was not going to eat pasta. What do I do? Eat manicotti. Go Sara.
I had a stomach ache for 2 hours. Nice.
Obviously, I didn't not sleep the night before- way too nerve wracked!
I felt really good at the start line and the first 18 miles flew {well, as fast as 18 miles can fly!} by. Corey, Asher and Elijah met me at mile 14 with a new water bottle and some hugs! It was right after the 1/2 marathoners had broken off, and the course was getting pretty sparse, so it was very welcome!

Mile 18- I started feeling some pain in my right knee. I have never had any pain in my right knee, it is always my left that bothers me, so I was surprised. By mile 20, it was beyond painful. I stopped at mile 21.5 to have an ortho-type-person feel it and see if it felt okay. It did, so I went on. I cannot tell you how bad it hurt to start running again. It felt like I was being stabbed in my IT band.
After that, I could not stop, for water, gel, anything. It hurt to darn bad to start up again, so I just pushed through. I was near tears at mile 23-24, but figured I'd crawl the rest if I had too.
I added over minute to my pace the final 6 miles, going from a 10:15 mile to a 11:somethingorother mile. Final time? 4:36:52
Here I am at the end! Yay! I am all alive and stuff!

I started crying at mile 26, because I knew I was so close and I could take the pain for a measly .2 miles, right? sorta
After crossing the line, I slowed down and went into a walk. About 3 steps in, my knee was so bad, I was in tears. A paramedic grabbed my arm, another one came and grabbed my other arm and took me into the med tent. They stretched me out, checked for injury {just the IT band} and gave me the nice ice you see in the picture.

My knee was  in major pain the rest of the night and yesterday. The doc told me to keep moving and take it easy...umm, do those go together?
However, Sunday night, I took Asher on a mile long limp walk to keep my knee from stiffening up. {Thank you to the lady who saw me hobbling along and stopped to see if I was okay!} Then? I went grocery shopping, with my mother, who refused to walk by me, because she said I looked constipated.

So, that is the long of it. When people ask me about it, I can truly say it was good, but bad. Meaning, I felt good, other than my stupid, painful knee, but the bottom line? I finished!

The subject ran her marathon. She loved it all, except for the pain part. But will that stop her? No. She will take a week or so off and begin training for her next this fall! For now? Look for her, hobbling along the halls near you...

Thank you Pacer Pete for all your help, conversation and advice! Pace on!

And Corey? Even though you don't ever read my blog, thanks! I seriously don't know what I would have done if my husband hadn't supported and loved me! Okay. Done with my emmy speech now. Bye.

That is amazing! I have a completely different kind of strength and determination- it does not cross over into the physical realm whatsoever! I would have wussed out. Congratulations on the accomplishment! Good Job!

Your mother wouldn't walk with you because you *l@@ked* constipated? Yet, she has no issues about ripping one in the middle of Target? LOL! Hey...I thought you were never going shopping with your mom again.

Anyway, I just think it is awesome that you ran the marathon and finished! (I'd have given up after the first, oh, 75 feet or so. Definitely after the pain set in.)

And, yes, I bet Princess E and Elijah would get along quite well. Maybe one day, they'll get to meet in real life. Never know.

Ok, that's AWESOME! You need to walk around with a boombox playing your own personal soundtrack everywhere you go, proclaiming your awesomeness. Maybe "We Will Rock You", or the Miss America song. Go with what you feel.

I'm glad to know Wiggle Man isn't the only child obsessed with garbage cans. Perhaps he and Asher could start a blog for all things trash-related.

You continue to be an endless source of inspiration to me. Seriously, Sara. You ran a marathon on an injured?

I adore you, your boys, and your perseverance. If you weren't a runner, I'd say your love of pasta would very well make us soul mates.

Congratulations on your hard-earned victory.

You are amazing! I can't believe you're already gearing up for the next one! Good luck.

1st of all a HUGE congrats! There's NO way I could've run what you just did.

2ndly, no wonder you went to WalMart with your Mother, you were too embarrassed to go to your beloved Target with the limp, I mean walk, your Mother described. Silly girl, you knew you wouldn't have a good time at WallyWorld! But then came the blue man. At least seeing him made the trip worthwhile!

I get it! I'm reading your blog and going, "Uh-huh, I remember that feeling" and everything! I was a total bag of nerves for several days beforehand!! And I totally remember how the course just empties right after the half breaks off...

You rock, though!! I'm also impressed that you have another one ready to go... I promised myself to wait until the fall before I decide to sign up for another...

You're amazing! Hope the knee is feeling better.

Again, I am so proud of you. I was almost in tears just reading about how painful the last few miles were for you, and yet you pushed through. I've always said that you are a ROCK STAR! You have now 100% proved my point!

Question... what type of iPhone holder do you use while you run? I have an armband by Griffin that I use, but it leaves nasty scrapes on my arm and it's not the most comfortable. When I am finally allowed to run again (I'm going crazy here with not being able to) I want to be able to use a new holder. What's your advice?

I LOVE YOU SISTER!

Awesome job! I am so impressed. You are officially a marathon mommy now! I have read that for every mile you run in a race, you should take that many days off to rest. Congratulations!

You are a crazy ROCKSTAR!!! I was gasping for air when I read and reread EIGHTEEN miles! Then you kept going?! I think I passed out from exhaustion somewhere between mile 20 and 21.5. Then someone threw water on my face and I was able to read the rest of your post. Congratulations on finishing your race, pushing through the pain, and your general awesomeness!

Sidenote: Actually my oldest is 20 years old! He has left the teen years. And no, I don't look old enough to have teenagers, although technically I am. They are my step-sons. They were born when I was in HS, my hubby is 10 years older then me. So yes, they could be my biological children but I would have been a naughty girl in HS if they were. (Not putting ANYONE down if that is the case for someone reading this!) Anyways...my explanation.

Bless your heart! I stopped by via another blog today and wanted to let you know how proud of you I am. I've done the same thing...in another life and I remember running the last couple of miles in screaming I/T pain. I actually had to finish as a half marathon...a big disappointment. Hope you are recovering alright.

YOU are my hero--I ran from my house to the end of our street--and thought I would die...you give me hope! :)

Congratulations!! I've "watched" as you've trained and can't believe you're first marathon is already over...you amaze me. A marathon is on my list of things to do before my life is over and so I'm trying to draw inspiration from your magnificent feat. Keep up the good work and keep letting us know how it's going so I can continue to draw motivation from your success!

WOW, I am so impressed by you! I can't imagine running a marathon. So sorry about your knee. I hope the few weeks of rest will do you good. Congrats again.

Why am I just now seeing this post? *sigh* I don't know, this week is completely crazy.
Great job again though! I would love to be able to do that. But just walking 5 miles on the treadmill almost killed me so I don't see a marathon in my near future.

Congratulations again! Amazing timing, especially given your hurt knee!

you are officially my HERO! i could never run a marathon. i have a hard enough time running my 2.5 miles everyday. 4 hours of running would honestly KILL ME!

you need to come and do the Chicago marathon...not that i'm going to do it or anything, but i've heard it's great! also, come my way and do the triathlon with me again next year!

Congrats. I am so going to do a marathon some day. I bet the nerves part is what makes it the worst. I remember those good 'ol track days, the adrenaline.... oh, the memories. I need to get back into it already. Geesh.

Great job!!! You totally rocked it! I walked a marathon in Hawaii in 1998 and I was crying by mile 17 and at the end I could barely move I was in so much pain! I thought I was trained and ready, but the actual day was pretty tough. Nice work.
